What is edge ravel on an Ottawa driveway?
Edge ravel is the progressive crumbling and disintegration of asphalt along the outer edges of a driveway, where the pavement lacks lateral support and is most exposed to freeze-thaw stress, snowplow impact, and vehicle overhang.
It is one of the most common forms of asphalt deterioration in Ottawa, and it almost always starts at the edges because that is where the asphalt is thinnest, least supported, and most vulnerable to the forces that Ottawa's climate throws at it every single winter.
Why Ottawa Driveways Are Especially Prone to Edge Ravel
The edge of an asphalt driveway is structurally the weakest point. When hot-mix asphalt is placed, the edges cool faster than the centre because they are exposed to air on two sides rather than one. This rapid cooling makes it harder for the paving crew to achieve full compaction at the edges, leaving the asphalt slightly more porous and less dense than the middle of the driveway. Over time, water penetrates those pores, freezes, expands by roughly 9 percent, and begins breaking the asphalt binder apart from the inside — one freeze-thaw cycle at a time. Ottawa's 50 or more freeze-thaw cycles per winter means this process is relentless from November through March.
Compounding this is the lack of lateral confinement. The centre of a driveway is held in place by the surrounding asphalt on all sides. The edge has nothing holding it in from the outside. Once a small piece breaks away, the new exposed edge becomes the next failure point, and the ravel progresses inward season after season. Without intervention, what starts as a 25mm crumble along the edge can eat 150 to 300mm into the driveway surface within 3 to 5 Ottawa winters.
Snowplow blades and metal-edged snow shovels accelerate this dramatically. A plow blade catching a slightly raised or crumbled edge tears away chunks of asphalt that would otherwise have held together for another season. Ottawa homeowners who plow their own driveways often unknowingly worsen edge ravel every time they clear snow.
What Causes It in the First Place
The most common root causes are inadequate edge support (no concrete curbing, steel edging, or compacted granular shoulder holding the asphalt in place), thin asphalt lifts at the edges (less than 40mm compacted), poor compaction during original installation, and driveways where the surrounding lawn or soil has settled away from the asphalt edge, leaving it unsupported and exposed. Builder-grade driveways in Ottawa's 2000s and 2010s subdivisions — Riverside South, Findlay Creek, newer Barrhaven sections — are particularly prone to this because they were often paved with minimum lift thicknesses and no edge restraint.
How to Address It
Catching edge ravel early — when the crumbling is less than 50mm wide and the base beneath is still solid — allows for relatively inexpensive repair. A professional can saw-cut a clean vertical edge back to stable asphalt, tack-coat the cut face, and pack in hot-mix asphalt that is compacted flush with the existing surface. This costs roughly $150 to $400 depending on linear footage. Installing a steel or aluminium driveway edging restraint after the repair prevents recurrence by giving the asphalt edge lateral support.
Once edge ravel has progressed more than 150mm inward or the base beneath the edge is compromised, repair becomes less cost-effective. At that point, a full-width mill and overlay or complete driveway replacement is usually the better long-term investment.
Maintaining a compacted granular shoulder (100mm of Granular A) along both sides of the driveway is the best preventive measure — it supports the asphalt edge, slows water infiltration, and gives snowplow operators a forgiving transition zone instead of a hard edge to catch.
