Should I plan an Ottawa concrete drive with a permeable side strip?

A permeable side strip alongside your concrete driveway is an excellent design choice for Ottawa homes — it helps manage stormwater runoff, reduces ice buildup along edges, and can help you stay within the City of Ottawa's lot coverage limits while maximizing your driveway's functional width.

Use sand for traction instead. Snow removal should be done carefully to avoid catching paver edges with metal shovels or plow blades. The permeable strip will likely need occasional maintenance cleaning every 3 to 5 years to remove accumulated sediment and restore infiltration rates.

Hire a professional contractor experienced with both concrete and permeable paver installation — the success of this design depends on proper grading, base preparation, and coordination between the two surface types. The contractor should understand Ottawa's frost depth requirements and clay soil challenges to ensure both surfaces remain stable and functional through multiple freeze-thaw seasons.
