Should I add a thin overlay to fix surface cracks in Ottawa?

A thin asphalt overlay is rarely the right solution for surface cracks in Ottawa and often creates more problems than it solves. Overlays work only when the existing base is completely stable and cracks are purely surface-level from aging — not from underlying structural issues.

Even then, the existing surface must be thoroughly cleaned, cracks filled, and tack coat applied for proper bonding.

Practical recommendation: Have a qualified paving contractor assess whether your cracks indicate surface aging or structural issues. If water pools anywhere on your driveway, you see edge cracking, or cracks are wider than 10mm, skip the overlay and plan for proper replacement. A quality rebuild lasts 20-25 years in Ottawa; a failed overlay needs replacement in 3-5 years.
